#5 Office Visit with Dr. Cohen, Gastroenterology Department (February 17, 2010)

When I told Rubin I needed to see a GI he totally agreed. "Of course, of course, that would have been my next suggestion." I wondered why he hadn't thought of it before.

There was nothing remarkable during the office visit with Dr. Cohen other than a colonoscopy test was ordered. The procedure would be performed by Dr. Streett at Kaiser in Vallejo as Dr. Cohen was going on vacation.

Hi Everybody,

Welcome to my scary, silly, horrendous, hopeful, dire, repulsive, seductive, big, bad cancer blog. I say mine because I'm the one with cancer, but this blog would not exist without my astonishing wife, Thanh Ha. She made it happen so we would have a place to put it all out there. “It’s A Boy!” – A Mother’s Thoughts

As I reflect on the three quarters of a century I've been alive, the happiest moments were when the nurse put my children in my arms for the first time. A beautiful day in June 1955 my husband Mickey and I named him Hunter Robert. Mid-March of this year, 2010, we were told he had six months to live. The words, a hot poker burning into my flesh. The words a mother should never ever have to hear in her lifetime about her child.

To know my son is to know a man who pictures a goal in the distance and does what he has to do to become that picture. Then turns the picture into a painting, a work of art. I’ve watched him work his way up as a Chef in San Francisco and then a Restaurateur in the Napa Valley. Then he started to write stories and poetry, out of the blue, just sat down and started. He’s had some things published and came close in few contests and he hasn’t given up. I know he’ll be successful. He already is to me.

He will fight and win over this heinous disease. He will win over the statistics to go on and live happily with his precious wife Ha, who on this journey has been his grounding and loving support. He will live years and years longer than the prediction of his prognosis. As Hunter's Mom, I hold this, in light, in my heart and in my soul. His win, his re-birth, will be the second happiest day of my life. - Barbra Austin December ’10
